Changing your registered residence: how to report your new address

Published on

Have you moved home? You should report your new address to the municipality. This keeps your population-register information up to date and helps you receive official communications, request documents and use public services correctly.

Change of residence or change of address?

  • Change of residence: you move your habitual home to another municipality or arrive in Italy from abroad.
  • Change of address: you move to another address within the same municipality.

In both cases you must submit an official population-register declaration. The exact procedure may differ slightly between municipalities.

Why is updating your residence important?

Your registered residence is the place where you usually live. An up-to-date address is important for receiving public-authority communications, accessing municipal services, requesting certificates and documents, and handling school, health-care or social-service procedures.

Which documents should you prepare?

You will usually need:

  • a valid identity document;
  • your codice fiscale;
  • a rental contract, property deed, hospitality declaration or another document showing your legal basis for occupying the home;
  • driving-licence and registered-vehicle details when requested;
  • for foreign citizens, any additional documents required by the municipality according to nationality and residence status.

If other people are already registered at the address, the municipality may also request their consent or information about your family relationship. Always check the official list before submitting the application.

How can you apply?

You can use the National Population Register (ANPR) online service with SPID, CIE or CNS. Many municipalities also accept applications through their own online portals. Depending on the municipality, certified e-mail (PEC), registered post or an appointment at the registry office may also be available.

Keep the receipt after submitting the declaration and monitor the application. The municipality checks the information and may ask for additional documents.

Important

Simply moving or changing your contact address does not automatically change your registered residence. You must submit a formal declaration. Local procedures may change, so check your municipality’s official website or ANPR for the current documents and submission channels.

Do you need help?

Sportellino can help you understand the steps and prepare your documents free of charge. For the official procedure, visit the ANPR change-of-residence service.
