Where to begin

The type, duration and procedure for an Italian residence permit depend on the reason for staying, such as work, family, study or protection. There is no single document list that applies to everyone.

First identify whether you need an initial permit, renewal, conversion, update or replacement. Check whether the application is submitted with a postal kit or directly to the Questura.

What to do

1. Identify the procedure

Use the official Immigration Portal or ask an authorised patronato which procedure applies to your permit.

2. Prepare documents

Usually you need a passport, copies of used pages and documents proving the reason for your stay. Additional evidence and payments vary.

3. Submit the application

Many applications use an authorised post office; other types are handled directly by the Questura.

4. Keep the receipt

Keep the postal or police receipt, expired permit and identification. The receipt is useful for tracking the application.

Before you start

  • Check that names and dates match on every document.
  • Start preparing a renewal well before expiry.
  • Keep copies of every form, receipt and appointment notice.
  • Do not trust anyone who guarantees an approval in exchange for money.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work while waiting for renewal?

In certain conditions a person who submitted a regular renewal request may continue to stay and work. Verify the rule for your permit.

Is the receipt the same as the permit?

No. It proves that an application was submitted and may have legal effects, but it is not identical in every situation, especially for travel.

What if a document is missing?

Ask the responsible office whether and how it can be added. Never provide false information or documents.
