Where to begin
The type, duration and procedure for an Italian residence permit depend on the reason for staying, such as work, family, study or protection. There is no single document list that applies to everyone.

1. Identify the procedure
Use the official Immigration Portal or ask an authorised patronato which procedure applies to your permit.
2. Prepare documents
Usually you need a passport, copies of used pages and documents proving the reason for your stay. Additional evidence and payments vary.
3. Submit the application
Many applications use an authorised post office; other types are handled directly by the Questura.
4. Keep the receipt
Keep the postal or police receipt, expired permit and identification. The receipt is useful for tracking the application.
